Growing puppies generally need more energy relative to body size than adult dogs. Their needs change during growth, so a calculated value should be reviewed against growth rate, body condition, the food label, and veterinary advice.
After converting weight to kilograms, RER = 70 × weight in kg^0.75. The estimate uses 3 × RER for puppies under four months and 2 × RER for puppies four months or older that are still growing.
A 5 kg puppy has an RER of about 234 kcal/day. If under four months, the 3.0 growth factor gives about 702 kcal/day. If older and still growing, 2.0 × RER gives about 468 kcal/day.
This is for healthy growing puppies only. Growth rate, expected adult size, activity, body condition, environment, neuter status, and food characteristics can affect intake. It does not replace veterinarian or pet-food feeding guidance.## Methodology references
