Explanation

RER estimates energy used at rest. MER applies an adult-status factor to RER to create a practical starting estimate for daily energy intake. The selected obesity-prone status is an estimate category, not a weight-loss prescription.

Formula and methodology

Weight is converted to kilograms, then RER = 70 × weight in kg^0.75. Estimated MER is RER multiplied by 1.6 for a neutered adult, 1.8 for an intact adult, or 1.4 for an obesity-prone adult.

Worked example

A healthy 20 kg neutered adult has an RER of about 662 kcal/day. Multiplying by 1.6 gives an estimated MER of about 1,059 kcal/day as an initial feeding-planning value.

Assumptions and limitations

This calculator is limited to healthy nonpregnant, nonlactating adult dogs. Do not use it for a dog with a medical condition or as a treatment plan. Individual needs and food intake should be adjusted through body-condition and weight monitoring with veterinary guidance.## Methodology references

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between RER and MER?

RER estimates resting demand. MER multiplies RER by a status factor to estimate maintenance demand.

Can I use this for a pregnant or nursing dog?

No. Those dogs have different needs that should be planned with a veterinarian.

Is the result a weight-loss target?

No. The tool does not provide therapeutic weight-loss recommendations.
