Explanation
Choose the same calorie-density format shown for the food: kcal per cup or kcal per 100 g. The calculator uses one mode at a time and divides the daily calorie estimate into one, two, or three meals.
Formula and methodology
For cup-based food, cups/day = daily kcal ÷ kcal/cup. For weight-based food, grams/day = daily kcal ÷ (kcal per 100 g ÷ 100). Per-meal values divide the daily amount by meal count.
Worked example
If a dog has an estimated 300 kcal/day target and food contains 400 kcal/cup, the estimate is 0.75 cup/day: 0.375 cup at each of two meals or 0.25 cup at each of three. If food contains 120 kcal/100 g, the same target is 250 g/day.
Assumptions and limitations
Use calorie density for the exact product and measuring basis. Volume measures can be imprecise, recipes can change, and treats or other foods count toward total intake. Calculated volume alone does not guarantee complete and balanced nutrition or an appropriate diet for an individual pet.
