Measuring a mulch bed
Divide irregular beds into simple sections and add their volumes.
Formula and methodology
Depth in feet = inches ÷ 12. Cubic feet equal length × width × depth; cubic yards equal cubic feet ÷ 27. Bags equal cubic feet ÷ bag volume, rounded up.
Worked example
A 20 ft by 8 ft bed at 3 inches needs 40 cubic feet or 1.481 cubic yards. Two-cubic-foot bags produce 20 bags.
